Powerful Writer of his Time!

Growing up while reading all of these in the original German and in the fine English translations. Every story impacts and remains in one's memory bank.

Each story is a masterpiece

Thomas Mann won the Nobel Prize for "Buddenbrooks" and "The Magic Mountain"--both toweringly long novels of great complexity. These short stories, however, are as sharp and quick as a paring knife. Some of the stories are sketches for the monumental novels to come, such as "Tristan"--a satirical look at inmates in a sanatorium. Others are sweetly sick, for example "Blood of the Walsungs", which has something of the style of "Death in Venice." Some say the children in "Walsungs" are modeled after Mann's own. I don't know if this is true, but it's a shocking idea.

The stories vary from whimsical to fantastic, to tragic or even tragi-comedy. They are some of Mann's best work outside his novels, and though some are early works, they are interesting in showing the seeds of theme and promise in Mann's later great works. I consider this a "must-read" for anyone tackling Mann's bigger works.

Intriguing and Exciting - Read it!

"Stories of Three Decades" is an excellent compilation of Mann's stories for novice and connoisseur alike. It contains the expected and well-known short stories such as Death in Venice and Little Herr Freidemann, but also more obscure but equally intriguing and accessible works such as his complete play "Fiorenza." The inclusion of this play exemplifies the thoroughness of the compilation, since this is the only book in which I've been able to find the play translated into English.
I found the translation was a bit more literal than in other translations, but this doesn't take away from the artistry. If anything, it more accurately depicts the cadences of Mann's original German so that we can more accurately understand his tone, if not necessarily the beauty and complexity of the descriptive language.
I urge EVERYONE to buy and read this book. The beauty of the short length of some of his stories is just that: they're short! So if you just want a small dose of Mann, you can select a short story, or if you want a large dose, you can select a longer work. Just approach the masterful literature with an open mind ready for a fresh experience, and there's no chance you'll have a Mann overdose!

About the Author
Brenda Griffith began kiln-forming glass in the mid-1980s. In 1987 she launched her own art glass company, Siyeh Studio. She is a two-time NICHE Award finalist in the Fused Glass category. Her work appears in more than 40 galleries in 20 states and Canada. She is a member of the Atlanta Glass Artist's Guild, The International Guild of Glass Artists, and The American Craft Council. Brenda lives in Atlanta, GA.

Great resource for getting serious with glass art

I've been avidly collecting and reading "fusing" (kilnformed glass) books for about 20 years, and this may be the best single book on studio practice I've seen yet. As it says, it's not a beginner's book (Griffith's earlier book, Beginner's Guide to Kilnformed Glass, does that),. Rather, it's the book you'll want once you have a few successful kilnformed pieces under your belt and have begun to wonder if there's more to kilnforming than sushi dishes and bowls.

It's divided into three sections (and Lark should really add some "look inside" samples to Amazon so you can see what I'm talking about). The first covers setting up and using a glass studio. The second deals with more advanced ways to decorate glass for firing (casting, 3D printing, airbrushing, sandblasting, box making, etc.). Spoiler alert: If you're into making jewelry, she's got some advanced tips for creating dichroic slabs and precious metal clay findings that you'll love.

The third section, though, is where this book really shines. Griffith has experimented with applying other media techniques to glass practice, and they're pretty exciting. She shows you how to make your own glass pastels and glass clay (which can be fired in the kiln the way you can fire ceramics), create marbling effects with glass enamels, make your own roll-ups, and more.

The information is presented in an exploratory, "I wanted to see what would happen if I..." fashion, which gets my own creative juices going. Griffith takes pains to explain exactly how she got to a certain point, which makes it very easy to use her explorations as a starting point for my own. She includes firing schedules for both glass and PMC, with a quite-proper "your mileage may vary" warning.

About the only real criticism I'd have is minor: On a couple of projects Griffith takes you through the very well-illustrated steps but doesn't show the finished piece. There's so much else going on here, though, that I don't really miss it.

Excellent book for those of us that are ready to ...

Excellent book for those of us that are ready to learn skills that go "beyond the basics." The sections on setting up a studio, equipment, and tools is extremely valuable as they are quite the investment. The explanations of the science and engineering aspects are clear. I have used Brenda's first book constantly since I first started working with kiln-formed glass five years ago and this is a fabulous "next step." Highly recommended.

Exactly what the title says and more.

This is definitely not for someone who just bought their first kiln. It is so nice to find an interesting book that doesn't cater to those who have hardly handled a glass cutter. I have been working in glass quite a while and love to find books that don't give me projects but push me toward techniques I haven't thought about before and give practical advice on things I have tried that maybe did not go as I had planned.The Gallery pages are gorgeous and inspiring. I do wish there was more of a buyer's guide for tools and materials mentioned that are outside of the glass realm. A great book for true glass geeks, you know who you are.

Lyrical poetry in 4/4, 8/8, and 3/4 time signature.

Monogamy Songs is 2 sides (a and b) of lyrical poetry at its best. Each poem can be viewed as an album track, with so many lines that resonate as highly quotable and printable on a t-shirt:

Track 1 - "There's no reason to care about the weather when there are roofs."
Track 2 - "What is so magical about a marker?"
Track 3 - "When I am not writing poems, I am breaking backs."
Track 4 - "This book is a sing-along poem."
Track 5 - "I hope I am so late to work the world is already ending."
Track 6 - "I have done so many studies on the economics of my heart someone should give me a lab coat."
Track 7 - "I don't know why balloons exist, except to make children cry when they drop the string."
Track 8 - "In my heart I am busy packing a picnic I won't have time to eat."

Gregory Sherl is an extremely talented writer, a man of poetry and a man of full of heart just waiting to warm yours.

The book has the courage to not succumb to any genre. Is it a memoir? Is it poetry? Is it fiction? It doesn't matter. What really matters is the beauty of the images. The beauty in the dance between poetry and pop culture. The beauty of telling a story so genuine and heart wrenching that you just can't put it down. I've used this book when researching abiotic and biotic processes and for modeling transport and fate processes. Chapter 8 covers the applications of transport and fate information with tracer studies, remedial technologies (i.e., cyclic pumping) movement of LNAPLs into the subsurface. Appendix A presents physical, chemical and fate data for priority pollutants which I have found helpful. Overall this is a good text and is a useful reference.

Good info but...

The author takes a somewhat casual approach. At first, it was a bit off-setting as I was expecting a more "professional" presentation of the material. Still, I got used to it and was able to get some good information from the book. There are A LOT of questions presented and many of them are very similar to others. Perhaps it should have been more like 50 questions to ask. He does sum it up at the end with the best 20 questions. After reading through the whole book, I think just those last 20 at the end of the book would have been sufficient. One other "complaint:" I am in the medical field and felt the book was aimed more at business jobs particularly sales jobs. A lot of the questions do not apply for medical position interviews.

Excellent Book! A MUST for anyone seeking questions to ask in an interview!

This was an excellent book, with a lot of great questions to ask in an interview. I purchased this a week before an interview for a position at my current company and just skimmed through the book the night before the interview and wrote down 20 questions. In my interview, the interviewer asked me 20 of his own questions and when it came time for me to ask questions, I asked my 20 questions. :)

Although I didn't get the position I had initially interviewed for due to lack of experience, the interviewer was so impressed with me asking as many questions as I did, he wanted me on his team to replace the person who had been offered the other position. When he posted the other position, I had to interview for it (I was the only person who applied) and asked some of the same questions again, but not as many and more geared towards the new position. Needless to say, I've been offered the job and we are working on the hours I will work.

I haven't tried these questions on any external positions, but they worked great for internal positions, so I'm confident that if I were applying for positions outside the company, these questions would be very good to ask.

A "Must Read!" for Job Seekers

I thought I was ready to begin interviewing, then I picked up this book and its companion "101 Great Answers to the Toughest Interview Questions". I realized that I still had a lot of work to do before crossing a prospective employer's threshold. This book not only tells you what you need to do before the interview, it gives you the tools and worksheets with which to properly prepare. I was once a manager who conducted interviews for positions within my department. I was not a trained interviewer. I saw my interviewing style described in this book, and it was not flattering. At the time I thought I was a good interviewer. My employees were good employees and often advanced within the company, so I must have done something right. In reading this book I realized I was the "gut feeling plus skills" employer. If you are a job seeker you owe it to yourself to read these books long before leaving the house.

Our formative years are the ones that stick with us the most--you know, those tirelessly frustrating yet unforgettably magical moments that shape us into the people that we will become. The music that I liked as a teenager, the books that I read, the relationships that I created (and destroyed)...those are the things that I think truly formed the adult that I am today. I still love those things. I still think about those things. I still harbor a lot of anger in relation to the events that I experienced as a teenager, and it does nothing but fuel my creative spirit. And that's what I like to write about: Teenagers, and all of their idiosyncrasies, and concerns, and that whole unintentionally egocentric view that they have about their worlds. I find it fascinating. I'm thankful every day that I'm no longer a teenager, but I have to admit that it's a interesting time to look back on. Miles and August encompass a lot of me, and my experiences, and my observations. The music, books, and beliefs that I held at that time inspired me to write about the events that take place in Enthrall. My intense hope is that somebody reads it and is able to relate, or get through a difficult time, and just know that somebody understands what he/she is going through (at least a little bit.) That's what music and books did for me. I hope to pay it forward.

Highly Entertaining - Young Adult Page Turner

I purchased this book for a nephew who, unfortunately, does not like to read books. Enthrall was recommended by a friend as a young adult story that would resonate with today's teenagers. Perhaps because the primary topics are sex, music, superpowers, teen angst, bent but not broken families, bullies, mean girls, mean ex-boyfriends and more sex.

I started to glance through Enthrall while waiting for a World Series game to start, and, before I knew it, I had read six chapters. M. R. Reed uses an interesting writing convention that really propels the story. Odd-numbered chapters (1, 3, 5, etc.) are written in the voice of Miles, the teenage male character. Even-numbered chapters are written in the voice of August, the teenage female character. I found myself eagerly looking forward to the ensuing chapter so I could find out what the other person was really thinking.

Each of the protagonists is from a dysfunctional home environment. Miles' father is a drunk who verbally and physically abuses Miles' mom. August's father leaves his family for his gay boyfriend. Needless to say the stress levels are high for all of the members of both families. It is against this background that Miles and August find each other. The writing is crisp and the dialogue is entertaining and believable. When speaking in their own voice, Miles and August each exhibit and alternate among their insecurities, angst and strong self-belief. When viewed by the other person each seems to have his or her life together.

The fun is in the two finding each other, exploring their sexuality, dealing with their problems and living their lives as best they can under very trying circumstances. Miles finds that he has an ability to make others do as he wants. Will he use that ability for good to help he and August conquer their problems, or will he use it for petty, selfish purposes and to punish his enemies? Read the book and find out.

Highly recommended, but it does contain quite a bit of sex and liberal use of the F word.

Struggle of good and evil with music overtones

If you like superpowers, music, teen angst, this is for you. Well written, by someone who knows and understands the actual topics in this book. It's may not be fantasy but who doesn't live in a fantasy world. I have yet to finish this book but let me say I can't wait!

This book follows the relationship between Miles and August. Miles comes from an abusive home where he sees his alcoholic father belittle his mother. August is new to town and is living with her mother ever since her father left them. Miles has never had a girlfriend before so when August approaches him he is confused. August has had a bad experience with boyfriends until she meets Miles but she finds herself wondering if it can last. 
I loved the style of this book the odd numbered chapters are written from Miles point of view and the even chapters are from August’s point of view. This allowed the book to flow well and made you want to keep reading so you could see what the other person was thinking. The characters are well written and it is easy to visualise the characters and settings. The plot has a fantasy element that is unique and adds another dimension to the story. There is depth to the main characters that enables you to connect to them. 
I would recommend this book to the YA market as I feel they will be able to easily relate to the teenage leads. A well written and developed book that drew me in, making me want to know what happened.
