I've been electronically modifying my cars for a very long time - and this books reflect some of that passion.

The thing with making electronic car modifications is that many people think it's a closed book - that you have to be a computer scientist or electronic engineer to make any changes.

But that's just not the case - I am neither, and yet I've modified systems as diverse as electronic stability control, engine management, all-wheel drive torque split control systems... and many more.

So you don't need to be an electronics engineer to modify car electronics - but I do think you need to have a basic understanding of circuits, relays, resistors, potentiometers and the like.

That's why this book starts with the absolute basics - looking at very simple circuits. I then move onto to different signal types - analog and digital - and how to measure and modify these signals.  

As far as I am aware, there's not another book on the market that takes this approach - starting from scratch and then developing straightforward techniques that can be used to modify the most complex of car systems.

(And of course there are also some areas that this book does not explore - cracking software and making changes at that level, for example.)

If you currently make lots of mechanical modifications to your car but the electronics side of things is unknown to you, this book will help you understand what you can do - and how to do it.

About the Author
Julian Edgar started his working life freelancing for photography magazines. He then worked as a secondary school teacher for eight years, teaching humanities, before leaving teaching and becoming a full-time automotive writer.

He edited a national Australian automotive print magazine before becoming editor of AutoSpeed, an online car magazine. Along the way he wrote extensively for Silicon Chip, an electronics hobbyist magazine, while contributing articles to publications in Australia, the UK and the US.

He has owned cars with two, three, four, five, six and eight cylinder engines; diesel, petrol and hybrid petrol/electric drivelines; front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations; and cars with single turbos, twin turbos and superchargers.

He has been electronically modifying his cars for about 25 years, usually by very cheap and effective means. Over that time he has modified engine management systems, engine cooling systems, turbo boost controls, electric power steering systems, auto transmission controls, all-wheel drive torque split controls, stability controls, hybrid car regenerative braking controls, and lighting and sound systems.

Interesting and informative

I've enjoyed reading this book. The author has some interesting ideas and seems to be very knowledgeable. Nice quality printing and color illustrations. I will buy his other books. I'm interested in car electronics and have a basic level of knowledge. I may not do many of the projects in this book but it is good information and is motivating.

About the Author
Dr. Jack Kapoor is a Professor of Business and Economics in the Business and Services Division. Dr. Kapoor has taught Business and Economics at College of DuPage since 1969. He received his B.A. and M.S. from San Francisco State College and his Ed.D. from Northern Illinois University. Professor Kapoor was recently awarded the Business and Services Division's Outstanding Professor Award for 1999-2000. Dr. Kapoor is known internationally as a co-author of several textbooks including BUSINESS: A PRACTICAL APPROACH (Rand McNally), BUSINESS (Houghton Mifflin), and the forthcoming SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT (Richard D. Irwin/McGraw-Hill).

Les Dlabay teaches in the Department of Economics and Business at Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, Illinois. Over the past 25 years, he has taught more than 30 different courses in high school, community college, university, adult education, and teacher preparation programs. Dr. Dlabay has developed a wide variety of textbook materials, student activity guides, instructor manuals, testing programs, audio-visual materials, and software packages in the areas of Personal Finance, Consumer Economics, and International Business. Dr. Dlabay has served as a consultant to corporations, educational institutions, and government agencies. Interesting and unique

I've only started reading this book, but so far it's very interesting looking! It has a lot of color on the inside, and forms to fill out, or little questions. It's a unique book. Not really a textbook as much as a personal book for finances (works for classes too of course, it's just not boring). I'm Looking forward to reading more!

Used for College Book

Great art work and descriptions within the book; I used this book for my 3D design class in college. You don't necessarily need the latest edition, same content in the book regardless, the primary difference it that the later book is in black and white while the newest is in color. Or at least that is the only real significant difference I have seen.

Great shape for an excellent book

My husband teaches basic sculpture in a university. He said this book teaches 3D design using the basic elements and principles which make construction much easier to understand for a new student. The book was in terrific shape and came with in 2 days. It is a must have for anyone needing to figure out the fundamentals of design in 3D construction.

Excellent composition textbook

This is excellent- students are engaged by the essays. The chapters on writing techniques in the second half are extremely well done. Students actually pay attention and try to follow the instructions, which are clear and specific. Their essays have become more coherent and focused. This is the first semester I've used it. I'll continue to use it.

A brillant and well written book!

This book was just what I wanted. If you like classical music you will like it. There are well known composers such as Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven as well as those not so well known such as Faure and Strauss. I really like how the selections are organized in order of difficulty and get progressively harder as you work through the book. The mp3s are very helpful in developing the correct timing and expression that the piece requires. The pace is not to fast or too slow. The mp3s are so good I listen to it alone. Well this book is a must for beginners as well as more advanced harmonica players!
