     Since the end of its crippling 27-year civil war over a decade ago, Angola has changed almost beyond recognition. An oil-fuelled bonanza has brought about massive foreign investment and a fabulously wealthy new elite, making its capital, Luanda, the second most expensive city in the world. Today, fortunes are being made and lost overnight, and rich Angolans are eagerly buying up the assets of its former coloniser, Portugal. 
     Fascinated by this complex nation, perched at the forefront of a resurgent Africa, writer Daniel Metcalfe travelled to Angola to explore the country for himself. Ebullient and proud, and often unwilling to dwell on its past, Angola has a large army, a hunger for wealth and a need to prove itself on the continent. But as Metcalfe also discovers, it has some of the most grinding poverty in Africa as few Angolans have reaped the rewards of the peace. Nonetheless, amid Angola's brash reality, Metcalfe finds there is a place for a traveller who isn't there to make a quick buck. Crossing the country as ordinary Angolans do, talking to tribal elders, oil workers, mine clearers, street children, he encounters a place of extremes, where cynicism and excess go hand-in-hand with great hospitality and ingenuity. Metcalfe also reveals a colourful history of pirates and slave traders, capuchin monks, syncretic Christian cults and elaborate spirit masks. This is an Angola that symbolises nothing less than a broader turning point between the continents, the repositioning of the rich developed world versus Africa. About the Author
DANIEL METCALFE was born in London in 1979. After graduating in Classics at Oxford University, he went to live in Iran and Central Asia for a year and a half, following which he wrote Out of Steppe: The Lost Peoples of Central Asia, which was shortlisted for the Banff Mountain Book Award 2009 and the Dolman Travel award 2010. Having travelled extensively in Russia, Asia and the former Soviet Union, he has more recently focused on Portuguese-speaking Africa, inspiring Blue Dahlia, Black Gold: A Journey into Angola. Daniel has written for the Economist, The Guardian, Financial Times, Conde Nast Traveller and the Literary Review. He lives in Málaga, Spain.

Excellent exploration of Angola

I enjoyed the Blue Dahlia, Black Gold for the many reasons I enjoyed Metcalfe’s previous book Out of Steppe: the writing is superb, a pleasure to read, and Metcalfe’s wit, eye and analysis are sharp and discerning, giving the reader both an uncanny experience of the place explored – here Angola, where the ludicrously high cost of living alone would deter most travel writers – and a broader historical/contextual understanding of it. I find his investigative mind admirable, but most of all I delight in his sense of adventure. Among my favourite passages were his wild descriptions of riding Luanda’s candongueiro whose “drivers are like glue sniffers, desensitized to all but the near-fatal thrill” -- both hilarious and terrifying!
At times I felt the historical information overrode the experiential part of the narrative and from this I concluded it might be impossible to experience Angola today without the legacy of colonialism and the horrific war staring you down and demanding attention. While most countries live uneasily with their past, Angola's today seems littered both by real and metaphorical land mines, all of which would be incomprehensible without the patient, thorough and lively contextualizing Metcalfe provides. This book must have been a challenging undertaking to write and I commend Metcalfe for taking it on fearlessly and delivering an excellent travel narrative: it left me troubled by Angola as it rightly should.

Memorable

I enjoy reading travel books and this doesn't disappoint. I think some reviewers have been rather harsh.I found it a well written and entertaining account of an exciting odyssey through Angola and it's truly interesting. So much so that I think I'll spend my next holiday there. There are some photos but it could have done with a lot more.

A disappointing glimpse

On the cover of the book, Nicholas Crane praises it by stating that "Metcalfe has reminded us why travel writing matters". After having finished reading Blue Dahlia, Black Gold I feel the complete opposite: why travel writing doesn't. I firmly catalogue this book in the "How To Write About Africa" category presented by Binyavanga Wainaina. It ticks all the boxes.

The book is just that... a foreigner who soaks up some books on Angola and then travels 3 months around the country. I wonder what kind of review a book on the USA would get if it were written by some Angolan who reads a few books about the country and spends only 3 months there. Well, I can safely assume it would be superficial, perhaps out of point at times.

These attributes are the bulk of the book: his encounters are of varying interest, but some are frankly pathetic: whole views on a region are based on the insights of a couple of British NGO workers, other insights are the result of a picnic with expats in Luanda's outskirts.

These encounters are mixed with a healthy dose of history, which is inevitably interesting enough but is clearly written by someone who is essentially rewritting what other books already say. The result are pages and pages on the chronology of the civil war that could be straight out of a Wikipedia page (i am not saying they are, but thy do feel like it to me) in the sense that there's little in terms of original insight from the author. There can't be, of course, neither can there be any worthwhile insights into Angolan society because... it is written by someone who only spent 3 month in the country. In fact, when these are attempted they are slightly pretentious.

Perhaps it is travel writing at its best... Not a book about Angola but about someone's travels, nothing more. I wish I had better things to say about thi book, because I enjoyed Daniel Metcalfe's previous book, "Out of Steppe", a lot. Perhaps in that case the sheer enormity and variety of the places and peoples compensated other shortcomming, perhaps I have become too critical myself with the years.

Weird Church offers a framework for understanding what's happening to churches today, using Spiral Dynamics, along with examples and suggestions for congregations at several stages of development. Well organized and easy to understand, this book gives a perspective on Christianity after the demise of Christendom. This is a guide to 21st Century vitality, and it's not about saving a declining institution.

If you are tired of marginally productive church growth movements and want a new perspective that takes into account and draws upon the ways that Christianity has reinvented itself over its lifetime, this book is for you.

A Very Important Book for Today's Church Leaders.

So excited that this book is now available. Beth Ann Estock and Paul Nixon have written a incredibly important and inspiring book offering the Church some fresh and hopeful news about the future. It will look different than what we're used to. It will challenge leaders to think differently (yellow is the new blue!) And it will be weird! I am recommending it to all my pastor friends; all my friends in church leadership; all my friends who attend a church but wonder if this is all there is; to all my friends who have opted out of church; to all my friends who worry about whether or not there will be a church for their children and grandchildren; heck, I'm recommending it to everyone!

A must-read for 21st century faith communities

This is not a one-size-fits-all book, which makes it illuminating and refreshing. An Exceptional Read

Every older woman who is apprehensive about dating again needs to read this book. KarenLee Poter delivers a phenomenal guide to restoring self confidence and tenacity. Her book will help you to curtail all self doubt and apprehension you feel about dating. If I could sum it up in one word, I would use restorative.

I not only recommend this for women, but for men as well. It helped me better understand the obstacles faced older women. It will also give you insight in to becoming a better friend, boyfriend, and lover. I applaud Ms. Poter for her perseverance in broaching this subject, and redefining the meaning of the term COUGAR. I will definitely be purchasing her next book.

Born on the 8th September, 1887, in the noble family of Sage Appayya Dikshitar and several other renowned saints and savants, Sri Swami Sivananda had a natural flair for a life devoted to the study and practice of Vedanta. Added to this was an inborn eagerness to serve all and an innate feeling of unity with all mankind. Though born in an orthodox family, Swamiji was broad-minded and catholic, pious and devout.Born on the 8th September, 1887, in the noble family of Sage Appayya Dikshitar and several other renowned saints and savants, Sri Swami Sivananda had a natural flair for a life devoted to the study and practice of Vedanta. Added to this was an inborn eagerness to serve all and an innate feeling of unity with all mankind. Though born in an orthodox family, Swamiji was broad-minded and catholic, pious and devout. His passion for service drew him to the medical career; and soon he gravitated to those parts of the world which most needed his service. Malaya claimed him. He had also commenced editing a Health Journal and wrote extensively on health problems. He discovered he espoused it as his own mission. It was divine dispensation and the blessing of God upon mankind that the doctor of body an mind renounced his career and took to a life of renunciation to qualify himself for ministering to the soul of man. He settled down at Rishikesh in 1924, practised intense austerities and shone as a great Yogi, Saint, Sage and Jivanmukta. Swami Sivananda dressed to cloth himself, ate to live, and to serve humanity. A small dilapidated Kutir, not resorted to by others, and infested with scorpions protected him from rain and sun. With all his intense Tapas, Swamiji, did not neglect service of the sick. He visited the huts of the Sadhus with medicines, served them and shampooed their legs. He begged food on their behalf and fed them with his own hands when they fell sick. When necessary, he kept vigil throughout the night by the side of the bed of the ailing Sadhus. He served the pilgrims and saw Lord Narayana in them. Swamiji traveled the whole length and breadth of India during his Parivrajaka life. He conducted Sankirtan and delivered lectures. Swamiji, then, went on a trip to Kailas and Badri. He returned after the pilgrimage and started the Sivanand Ashram in the year 1932 on the right bank of the holy Ganga. In 1936 was born The Divine Life Society. He found and old Kutir, dilapidated and disused, which looked like an abandoned cowshed. To him it was more than a palace. He cleaned the Kutir and occupied it. Then, the increasing number of disciples who sought his lotus feet, undaunted by forbidding conditions of living, necessitated expansion. They found more sheds vacant, but uninhabitable filthy. Thus began the early life of The Divine Life Society. Sri Swami Sivananda believed in synthesis in everything, in Yoga as well as in the alleviation of human suffering. Swamiji radiated his divine and lofty message of service. Meditation and God-realisation to all parts of the world through periodicals and letters, through his books, running to more than three hundred. His devoted disciples were drawn from all religions, cults and creeds. Swami Sivananda’s Yoga which he has significantly called the ‘Yoga of Synthesis’, effects a harmonious development of the ‘hand’, ‘head’, and ‘heart’, through the practice of Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga and Bhakti Yoga. Widest possible dissemination of spiritual knowledge is the primary object of the Divine Life Society. Its illustrious founder Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj tirelessly worked for three decades from his small hermitage on the bank of the Ganga in pursuance of this worthy goal. On the 14th July 1963, the Great Soul, Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj, entered Mahasamadhi in his Kutir on the bank of the Ganga, in Shivanandanagar. The best Gita I've encountered

I found this originally in a used bookstore in 1970. It has been my constant companion ever since. Written in the 50's prior to the commercialization of Indian Gurus by the West, Sivananda's commentary and translation of the Gita is very pure and traditional. His is not catering to the west but writing the commentary for serious seekers who are Indians. So many modern Gita commentaries are watered down for Americans and sort of new-ageish or they push a very narrow sectarian agenda ("Bhagavad Gita As It IS" ie.,the Hare Krishna movement's version -- or Paramahansananda Yogananda's three volume version in particular apply here)

Sivanana's commentary is filled with deep insights into the various spiuritual paths delivered by a man who was widely acknowledged as being one of India's great spiritual teachers of the early to mid 20th century. (He died in 1963). He understands that the Gita teaches a variety of spititual paths and each is equally valid if followed with commitment. He delivers deep insights without watering the Gita down for the "masses."

This particular version is all one needs. The single desert island book.

An exceptional edition for exceptional readers

The Bhagavad Gita - Text, Word-to word meaning, Translation and Commentary by Sr Swami Sivananda. Shivanandanagar, Himalayas: Twelfth Edition, 2008. Hardback, xl + 576 Pages. ISBN 8170520002.

There was something very special about Swami Sivananda. You don't have to read much of him before realizing this and developing a powerful liking for him. His earlier edition of the Bhagavad Gita has been a constant companion of mine for many years. Since it is a pocket edition, however, it is only lightly annotated and without the very full and excellent commentary that we find in the present edition.

An earlier reviewer pointed out that "Sivananda's commentary and translation of the Gita is very pure and traditional. His is not catering to the west but writing the commentary for serious seekers who are Indians." I would agree with this. The commentary does have more of a 'devotional' flavor than the 'philosophic' flavor we find in other editions of the Gita such as that of Swami Gambhirananda's Bhagavad-Gita or, and especially, that of Dr. A.G. Krishna Warrier's Srimad Bhagavad Gita Bhasya of Sri Samkaracarya.

Readers should also note that the present edition gives the text of the Gita ONLY in Devanagari script and lacks (with the exception of a few words) the transliteration that we find, for example, in Swami Sivananda's pocket edition and in many other current editions of the Gita. What this means is that, although you can still enjoy the translation and most of the commentary, in order to make full use of this book you will need to be able to read Devanagari. This is made less problematic since the book is well-printed on quality paper with the Sanskrit in large clear easy-to-read fonts.

All in all then, I would pronounce the book an exceptional edition for exceptional readers. For descriptions of other editions of The Bhagavad Gita see my Listmania list. Excellent, all around!

I wholeheartedly agree with previous reviews and, if I had anything in particular to add, it would be this: this book doubles as a fantastic Sanskrit reader! As noted, the print is incredibly clear (and in devanagari much more legible than that in Lanman's venerable reader), and Sivananda offers fine word-by-word glosses of the Sanskrit text. Additionally, the language of the Gita is so elegant and simple that it serves as a fine first text for those wishing to apply their Sanskrit and learn a great deal more along the way. Sivananda's commentary itself is clear but lyrical, and, though it elucidates the text tremendously, it often offers analogies and aphorisms as insightful as those of the Gita proper. Truly, this edition is the work of a great thinker and spiritual leader in his own right, as Sivananda's biography would attest. Additionally, he offers great commentary on the meaning of particular terms of importance, pausing to reflect on them in a way that allows even non-initiates in Indian thought to grasp the meaning of concepts central to its history. The Gita itself is a work born out of a profound understanding of the human condition, and Sivananda's edition proves a worthy vessel for transmitting it to those not steeped in its traditions. Through the course of reading it, I found myself appreciating the work on literary, linguistic, and philosophical levels all at the same time. Really, I can't praise this work enough! Buy it now!

Highly recommend this book!

Mark's writing is clear and easy to understand. Many lawyers are still confused by the many different forms of alternative fees - in fact, they often don't understand how they work. Good content, but Kindle edition not great...

Excellent content and every page completely relevant and well written. The biggest downside however, is the poor picture and table quality in the Kindle edition. Whether viewing on my Kindle 3, my retina display iPad or my HTC One the poor quality really is disappointing for this otherwise premium book. If you're looking for my recommendation: unless the publishers opt for higher resolution pics and images ( which I hope they would do... But doubt it at the same time) then rather get the print copy.
