If you have read the same author's "Wings of Cherubs" you will know that he is a detail-focused historian with a singleminded obsession with the history of pisco, the peruvian grape spirit, in pre-prohibition San Francisco.

That might sound a little arcane, but it's important for any lover of historical cocktails: pisco was the drink of choice in San Francisco a century ago, and yet now so little is known about it in the US that even the recipe for Pisco Punch, once a must-drink cocktail for any visitor to the city, has been lost.

It's that kind of mystery that set Toro-Lira on a nearly decadelong hunt through old archives and newspapers and dusty manuscripts to try to discover the lost recipe (his reconstruction is inspired and delicious). That hunt turned into the magical-realist "Wings of Cherubs."

For those interested in the hard facts -- the clippings, the photos, the ships logs, and so on -- they are all collected in this book, "History of Pisco in San Francisco." It was a monumental research effort, and this volume is a gift to the rest of us who haven't the skill or the fortitude to do something like that ourselves. It goes beyond pisco to present a snapshot of SF history, and in particular the surprising Peruvian role in it.

A fascinating History of Pisco in San Francisco

As a Peruvian and Pisco lover, I found Guillermo Toro-Lira's book fascinating. I had no clue of the long history of Pisco in San Francisco, and how the Pisco Punch was part of the night lifestyle in the City. The scrapbooking style presented in the book makes it easy and fun to read. If you love to read about Pisco and spirits and want to know more about the city of San Francisco, you'll find this book very informative and entertaining. I am sure Herb Caen would've loved this book. Praise to Guillermo Toro-Lira for this contribution to the History of our Pisco and the city of San Francisco.

Meegan Jones is an events professional focusing her work on developing sustainable management solutions for live events. Apart from producing practical solutions to sustainability challenges, working with industry peers she has researched and developed benchmarking and systems for assessing the impact of events. She uses her experience in marketing and event management across the retail, music and media industries to create scenarios which engage and activate the audience, performers, crew and the supply chain. About the Author
Athol Fugard was born in Middelburg, South Africa in 1932 and grew up in Port Elizabeth, the setting for many of his plays. After spending two years at the University of Cape Town and working as a deck hand, Fugard took up acting and then started to write his own plays. He moved to Johannesburg in 1958, where he set up a multi-racial theatre, for which he wrote, directed and acted. His plays and attacks on apartheid have brought him into conflict with the South African government, and in 1962 he supported an international boycott against the practice of segregation of theatre audiences.Athol Fugard still lives in Port Elizabeth, and also has a home in New York. Many of his plays are published by Faber in its Contemporary Classics series.

Another great play by Athol Fugard - less humorous than prior works but incredibly moving - can't wait to see it performed at Lantern Theater Company in the spring of 2014.

About the Author
Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace was born illegitimately in Greenwich, London, in 1875 to actors Mary Jane Richards and T.H. Edgar. As an infant he was adopted by George Freeman, a porter at Billingsgate fish market. Aged eleven, Wallace sold newspapers at Ludgate Circus and upon leaving school took a job with a printer. He later enlisted in the Royal West Kent Regiment, before transferring to the Medical Staff Corps, and was sent to South Africa. In 1898, he published a collection of poems called 'The Mission that Failed', and subsequently left the army to become correspondent for Reuters. South African war correspondent for 'The Daily Mail' followed and his articles were later published as 'Unofficial Dispatches'. His outspokenness infuriated Lord Kitchener, who removed his credentials. He then edited the 'Rand Daily Mail', but gambled disastrously on the South African Stock Market. Returning to England, Wallace at first reported on crimes and hanging trials, before becoming editor of 'The Evening News'. It was in 1905 that he founded the Tallis Press, publishing 'Smithy', a collection of soldier stories, and 'The Four Just Men'. The latter was published with the ending removed as an advertising stunt and he offered oe500 to readers who could successfully guess the ending. Unfortunately, many did and he was almost bankrupted. At various times Wallace also worked as a journalist on 'The Standard', 'The Star', 'The Week-End Racing Supplement' and 'The Story Journal'. In 1917, he became a Special Constable at Lincoln's Inn and also a special interrogator for the War Office. The Daily Mail sent Wallace to investigate atrocities in the Belgian Congo, a trip that provided material for his 'Sanders of the River' books. In 1923, he became Chairman of the Press Club and in 1931 stood as a Liberal Parliamentary candidate for Blackpool. Wallace's first marriage in 1901 to Ivy Caldecott, daughter of a missionary, ended in divorce in 1918 and he later married his much younger secretary, Violet King. Along with countless articles, some 23 screenplays and many short stories, Wallace wrote more than 170 books, which have been translated into 28 languages and sales of which have exceeded 50 million copies. Over 160 films have been made from his books - more than any other author. In the 1920's one of Wallace's many publishers claimed that a quarter of all books read in England were written by him. His sales were exceeded only by 'The Bible'. He died in 1932 whilst working on the screenplay for 'King Kong', having moved to Hollywood after being offered a contract by RKO.

Surprisingly entertaining

This was a $4 book I downloaded on my Kindle. I remembered watching Edgar Wallace movies in Germany back in the 70s where they are very popular. To be honest, I didn't really expect much, but was pleasantly surprised.

The book seems to be set at around the turn of the century in London and Hertfordshire. A young lady working as a chashier for a rich spoilt heir turns down his advances and loses her job over it. The heir is taking the rejection very badly and swears revenge. He tries to frame her for theft but is stopped by his cousin, a sleuth who has returned from an extended sojourn in China. He is accompanied by his trusted Chinese sidekick, and both men are famous in China for hunting down dangerous criminals.. The story really starts when the heir is found murdered in a park, with daffodils on his chest. The young girl disappears and is an immediate suspect. The sleuth is falling in love with her and while chasing the murderer, also tries to exonerate the girl.

The story is fast-paced with some surprising twists, well written and great to read. One note of caution: the book was written in the 1920s and the references to China and the Chinese are interesting, to say the least. To be fair, Edgar Wallace described the English in as stereotypical way as the Chinese, and I would not let this put me off from enjoying a great period piece.

Zindel maintains the page-turning immediacy of his recent novels (The Doom Stone; Reef of Death) while examining a serious piece of WWII history: the making of the atomic bomb. Through the eyes of 13-year-old Stephen, the son of one of the scientists working in Los Alamos, N.Mex., Zindel reveals the moral dilemmas lurking behind a veil of secrecy. Stephen's father works side by side with Robert Oppenheimer and other renowned physicists. Stephen gets wind of the danger involved in their covert experiments after one of the scientists is hospitalized; the victim, Dr. Soifer, piques Stephen's curiosity and alerts him to the potential disasters that could result from the "Gadget." Stephen befriends Tilanov, whose father also works on the base, and they set out together to find answers about the mysterious project, an investigation that leads to danger and disillusionment. In Stephen, Zindel combines a canny mix of innocence and intelligence, and thus allows readers to examine carefully a complex set of questions about moral and political issues and responsibilities. The novel challenges idealized views of patriotism and unconditional trust. Readers will come away from this story with much food for thought, and can go on to further reading thanks to the book's comprehensive list of historical events and descriptions of figures who played a key role in constructing these first bombs. Gr 6-9-A suspenseful and fast-paced read. In 1944, 13-year-old Stephen is living in London amid the constant threat of German air raids that have already taken the life of his favorite cousin and soul mate. Fearing for his safety, Stephen's mother sends him by boat, then train, to join his father, an American physicist, in Los Alamos, NM. The boy's new home is on "Bathtub Row" of "Site Y," a tightly secured military base surrounded by high fences and attentive guards. Anxious to be united with his father, he is disappointed to find the man distracted and tired from working on a project he is unwilling to discuss. The mystery enveloping the base piques Stephen's curiosity and he accidentally ends up in the hospital room of a dying man who warns him about "the gadget." He is befriended by an older boy and, in a dramatic climax, they secretly follow the scientists off base and witness a horrific explosion, the first atomic bomb test on July 16, 1945, in the Jornada del Muerto Desert. In an epiphany, Stephen realizes the magnitude of this event and through his eyes, so do readers. Zindel's attention to historical accuracy is evident throughout. Unfortunately, Stephen's story is not as carefully crafted. Special circumstances and conveniences allow him to always be in the right place at the right time and a few incidents strain credibility. The series as a whole gets better and better

Vice and Dom keep pushing each other away then pulling each other back. While Vice is a tough lady, Dom doesn't think she can handle his lifestyle. Vice just really wants a chance to try. It all comes to a head when Vice is captured. Will Dom and the gang be able to get to her in time?

The series as a whole gets better and better. The whole gang is here and the group just keeps growing....
