Something for everyone indeed!

Whether you take this book along for the daily work commute, or reserve it for a rainy and cozy afternoon at home you will not be disappointed. Once you begin leafing through its well-designed pages you'll want to fold everything!

If Origami for All is your first origami book, it will introduce you to the different types of origami. If you are an expert, it will add some gems to your list of favorites. Origami for All indeed has something for everyone. It includes origami animals such a penguin and a cat, practical figures such a purse and a bracelet, origami for celebrations, geometric and modular origami. Even the human figure is represented in this book!

The diagrams -made by Eric Gjerde (master of origami tessellations), use universal origami symbols. The folding sequences have clear landmarks and are easy to follow, even for those who are just beginning with origami. The introduction, as well as the section explaining the origami symbols, are written in five languages including English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese.

I love Ionna Stoian's first origami book! It's a lovely introduction to elegant and simple origami.

Clever and simple designs and simply illustrated

There are 16 easy-to-fold designs that only need the clear diagrams to guide you. Ms. Stoian has demonstrated that less is more in her first book. The beautifully-printed deep navy blue ink on fine cream paper lends an understated elegance as well.

Truly Origami for All

For those who find satisfaction in folding a square of paper into something clever and fun, Ioana's book is a treasure. She has created stylishly simple designs that will delight children as young as nine or so. They should be able to follow the diagrams to fold quite a few of the objects successfully solo, and others with the guidance of a more experienced folder.

The book is compact and nicely printed on quality paper. I especially like that the designs include what I call useful origami - the place card holder and heart are perfect examples of this. Use the flat-folded heart to decorate a Valentine card and dress up a table with the place marker. Not only is the marker self-supporting, but it's also reusable... just slip in a different name card each time.

Many of the designs would be nice to work on together as family projects.. for example, the wonderful pleated bat and Christmas tree would be ideal as holiday decor.

Good monograph on Damascene

John Damascene was one of the last great church fathers to live before the great schism which separated Christianity between its Orthodox and Catholic branches. In both churches Damascene is revered as a great saint and theologian, and is a doctor of the Catholic Church.

Damascene wrote several works, including anti-heresy treatises, philosophical works, and the classical exposition of Christan theology called 'On Orthodox Theology', which outlines the Christian understanding of God. Damascene also defended the use of icons in Churches, against iconoclasts who desired to implement the Old Testament commandment about the destruction of images of the divine. The centrality of icons to the theology and faith of the Orthodox Church today is due in large part to Damascene's famous defence.

Like most Easterns, Damascene emphasizes the incomprehensibility of God's nature (the only thing we can know about God is his infinity and incomprehensibility) and his faith is deeply mystical at times. However, he remains essential reading for the student of church history and theology.

Louth (who has also written works on Dionysius and Christian mysticism) writes a readable introduction to this great Father's thought.

St. John avoided speculation, but rather understood his task to be that of a fatihful transmitter of the faith once delivered.

St John is shown here to be a Cyrilline-Chalcedonian, trying to bring together those factions who were so devoted to Cyril's formula: "one incarnate nature of God the Word."

Excellent for raising children

I read this book three times (and I dislike to read) my children are 20 and 18 now and I purchased this when they were 3 and 5. I have purchased this book on-line now to give to parents with new babies. I only wish I could purchase it in stores. It's an excellent, excellent book. Don't pass this one up. For someone who dislikes to read, I couldn't put it down. Thank you so much Dr. Stanley, because of this book, I have to wonderful young gentlemen.

Read, Re-read, Read Again

This is one of the best books on parenting I've ever read (and I've read a lot). I'm currently reading through it for the fourth time, because there's so much truth in it, and I want to really internalize all the wisdom Stanley offers up. I recommend this book for any parent who sincerely wants the best for their kids. An absolute masterpiece!

I ought to write a book titled Why Dr. Ruckman's books are a waste of time!

I am not a Seventh Day Adventist, but 15 years ago I took a long look at early and modern Seventh Day Adventism. Dr. Ruckman describes at many points of this book a staw man he calls Seventh Day Adventism, and then attacks the straw man. His attacks are based upon his view of what true Christianity is, although Dr. Ruckman is onsidered on the fringe the brand of Christianity he represents. The same goes for every books in his series. I'm not saying one should not read Dr. Ruckman's books ... its good to read different points of view. However, one should then look at what other pro-, anti-, and neutral writers have to say about the Seventh Day Adventists before jumping to any conclusions. Some folks will say "yep, I studied Seventh Day Adventism and they are a cult!" but when pressed further, one learns that these people read one anti-SDA book by their favorite writer and nothing else. All I have to say about that approach is, "What would Jesus do?". Rely on one witness with an ax to grind? Or look at least at pro and con writings and compare them with the Scriptures? I really think Jesus Christ would do the later, don't you?

Use consistent logic

I'm a Seventh day Adventist. I wasn't raised one. I spent many years searching . I became SdA after reading a similar book. I than discovered a SdA book written in response. The SdA writer used the Bible in a manner that let the scriptures interpreted itself.. It also made the writer of the anti SdA book seem foolish for taking their positions. I hope any one reading Dr Rickman's book will check out the SdA positions on these doctrines.

My family was SDA, my step-dad was SDA, which meant that from the age of 8 to about 18, I was SDA. I was baptized in the church when I was ten, and from fifth grade through junior high, I attended an SDA school. My freshman year of high school was spent at Campion Academy in Loveland Colorado. As a child, I took it seriously.

I loved Ellen White. I was jealous of her because she got to talk to god directly... I read her books, and I often had debates with the adults in my life... and I did quite well. I could argue Ellen White better than the adults around me.
Later, I left the church and moved on. I joined the Assembly of God denomination, and when that got too extreme, the Foursquare denomination. When I discovered that they, too, were lying to me, I joined a Religious Science church (now called the Centers for Spiritual Living).

Well, I'm done with the god thing and I've continued moving on so anything anyone could say about the SDA Church would not offend me...

That being said, what is Dr. Ruckman's purpose? Is he trying to have a logical debate about the SDA church? If he is, then he's pretty much debated every logical fallacy known. He attacks those who disagree with him using Ad Hominem. He sets up a straw man argument and proceeds to argue from there (I know this because I am familiar with SDA doctrine). He uses only anecdotal evidence, and of course there's the obvious fall-back of all religious fallacies... the appeal to authority. He's verbally abusive, and ultimately downright belligerent.

If he's really trying to simply alienate everyone around him, he's doing a great job. If Jesus or Paul used his oratorical strategy, we wouldn't even be discussing Christianity at all. Jesus' and Paul's followers would have abandoned the teachings altogether. I read about as much as I could take before I wanted to bang my head against the wall.

The good "doctor" (and you would think a doctor would know how to structure a debate) is really just a child; an immature pre-teen adolescent; and his arguments are childish. "You're a big old poopy-head because you don't believe the way I do..." "I hate you... and god hates you too!"

Am I also using Ad Hominem? Absolutely. I need to trust that the person I'm using to gather my education is... himself... educated. Those who can argue a point dispassionately can be trusted to give you the "truth" about their issue and provide a trustworthy and integrous message. And it's clear that this is not the case with this book.

So I would like to end with this message to "Dr." Ruckman: "I'm rubber, you're glue. Whatever you say bounces off me and sticks to you."
Oh, and call me when you finally get out of junior high. While you're in Jr. High, though... consider taking some debating classes... You could clearly use them.

About the Author

Carlton Cooke is the director of university research, Carnegie professor of sport and exercise science, and head of the Carnegie Research Centre for Performance Sport at LeedsMetropolitanUniversity.

Carlton has presented and published extensively on aspects of sport performance, physical activity, exercise, and health, principally in the areas of exercise physiology and biomechanics. He has worked with a range of partners in high-performance sport in facilitating, developing, and delivering support and research in sport science. He worked with a team of sport and exercise scientists from LeedsMetropolitan University in support of the British Army expedition to Everest West Ridge in 2006. The university continues to support preparations for army expeditions and other expeditions in the outdoors as well as commit to optimizing the role of the outdoors in higher education through the Carnegie Great Outdoors. Carlton has participated and competed in various outdoor sports and activities and continues to enjoy the outdoors both professionally and recreationally.

Dave Bunting is director of training and cofounder of My Peak Potential, an experiential learning and development centre in the Bavarian Alps of Southern Germany. He served 24 years in the British Army, predominantly within the Army Physical Training Corps, where he became a specialist in mountain leadership training. He has instructed in mountain training centres in Wales, Norway, Canada, and Bavaria. In Bavaria, he undertook the arduous year-long German Army Mountain Guide’s (Heeresbergfuhrer) course, becoming one of only a few British soldiers to have gained this prestigious qualification. Dave has a passion for mountaineering and has been involved in the organisation and execution of numerous expeditions, including 10 to the Himalayas. In 2006 Bunting led an elite selection of climbers from the British Army on a groundbreaking expedition in an attempt to become the first British team to climb the formidable West Ridge of Mount Everest. As expedition leader, Dave headed up the planning, team selection and preparation, and he was a strong member of the climbing team. This highly publicised expedition earned Dave an MBE and was filmed for the televised documentary Everest: Man vs. Mountain.

Dr. John O’Hara is a senior lecturer in sport performance physiology within the Carnegie faculty of sport and education at Leeds Metropolitan University. His PhD was on carbohydrate ingestion and endurance performance. He is a sport and exercise scientist accredited with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences. His research interests are focused on carbohydrate metabolism, hydration status, limiting factors for sport performance and the preparation of athletes for extreme sporting challenges. As a hill walker, mountain biker and climber, he has a keen interest in the outdoors. John has been on two Himalayan expeditions: Yala Peak (5500 m) and a climb to camp 1 on the lower slopes of Mount Everest (6100 m) with the Everest West Ridge 2006 team. He has also summited Mount Killimanjaro (5895 m). Through his cumulative experiences in academia and in the great outdoors, he led, developed, managed and delivered the multidisciplinary support services to the Everest West Ridge 2006 team, which included physiological, nutritional and psychological support. Since then, he has provided a similar level of support to other Army Mountaineering Association expeditions and other sporting disciplines, such as the Vendée Globe 2008, a round-the-world single-handed sailing race.

could have been a much better book

The content of the book, at least by index, is great, if you can find where it is before your patience run out. My only complain of this book, or the style that it was written, is it has way too much garbage in front of any real essence. For example, when it talks about endurance training, after 30 minutes of nonsense reading I still have no clue what the author was really trying to say.
I highly recommend another book "Mountaineering, the freedom of the hills". Concise, no BS, right to the point. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any section talking about training.

It is hardbound and very sturdy… lots of glossy pictures of nicely painted figures showing the troop movements; instead of the old school way of showing black and white box diagrams…. I really can’t say enough about this book. It is written by Rob Broom and the design and layout were done by Pete Borlace, both of whom worked at Games Workshop on some of the Warhammer projects. As a result, they know what they are talking about when they put these rules together. …I especially like was how everything is supported on their website. You can buy the books or sets with soldiers and rules, go to the forum and communicate with other players on battles, or get worksheets and things that other players have done to help with the flow of the game.”

Game looks great

Game looks great, no army lists except 2 examples in back. They have point costs for weapons & armour builds but nothing to help that I could find to stat up your own models. I was trying to do up my Italian Condotta Army and was totally bumfuzzled on how to get the base stats for just my commander alone, whats the point cost for for Strategy Intervention Points? (no idea), Whats the point costs for a troops CA, SA, KA Mo, AV, Formations, Special Abilities, etc, etc.... I mean it reads great, looks great but come on, if your not including army lists, then at least include a full build system not just a weapon & armour point system that leaves me scratching my head.

Addendum;
After downloading a few lists and trying the rules out, I can say they are a fine set of rules. Personally I will not use 25+mm figures as they are too expensive to startup and I am already heavily invested in 15mm figures. But using casualty caps works out fine just the same. Therefore I have bumped up my 2 star rating to 4 stars as it still needs a QRC and some handy play aids in the books back, as I had to keep flipping through the book to locate certain rules points dealing with morale tests, movement, weapon abilities, unit abilities, etc., which a list or something would have proved invaluable.

an amazing product for war gaming newbies and veterans alike!

Firstly, the book itself is beautiful. The full color pictures of amazingly painted minis and scenery are worth the cost of admission alone. This book would be right at home on your coffee table. The rules themselves are easy to understand but complex and flexible enough to give a wide variety of play in any era. I cannot recommend this product enough. Would buy again.

Great, simple set of rules with tons of support!

This book contains all the basics to fight any historical battle from close to pre-history to even the Civil War.
Its supported by over 500 army lists that are constantly being improved. If you like casualty removal in-depth movement and nice unique touches to units then this is the rule-set for you! Well done Scarab I'm more than impressed.
